How Deep Are Olympic Diving Pools?

The depth of an Olympic diving pool isn’t random. It’s carefully engineered for safety, performance, and compliance with international standards.
But how deep are these pools, really? And has that changed throughout Olympic history?
The Basics: What Governs Diving Pool Depth
Modern diving pool design is dictated by World Aquatics (formerly FINA). That is the global body that oversees competitive water sport events.
According to NBC’s Diving 101 guide, the pool into which Olympic divers compete must be at least 5 meters (about 16 feet) deep.
This standard ensures that even divers entering from the 10m platform have plenty of clearance beneath them after entry.
In 2025, World Aquatics reaffirmed that rule as part of an updated global facility certification process. The FINA Facilities Rules (2021–2025) also note that a diving pool’s water depth “shall not be less than 1.8 m at any point,” ensuring safe transition zones outside the platform entry area, but that is very shallow for traditional diving.
These regulations align with what coaches and engineers have known for decades — a 5 m well is the gold standard for safety.
Why the Depth Matters
When divers leave the 10 m platform, they can travel downward at nearly 35 mph (56 km/h) before hitting the water.
A 5m (16 ft) depth gives enough space for a diver to fully decelerate underwater without hitting the bottom.
Anything shallower risks injury and additional water volume also helps reduce turbulence and “bottom effect,” so divers don’t feel pressure bouncing back up as they enter the water which is more important for swimmers but could potentially effect divers.
The Physics Behind 5 Meters
A diver’s downward velocity off the 10 m platform approaches 15–16 m/s (35 mph).
Depending on entry position, body angle and underwater technique, they can travel 4.5–5 m below the surface before coming to rest.
That’s why the Wikipedia Diving page cites a 5 m depth as the safe minimum for platforms.
The extra buffer ensures divers avoid “bottoming out” and prevents reflected pressure waves from affecting entries.
