Has Anyone Ever Scored A Perfect 10 In Diving?

Yes, and more often than people expect.

A 10 from one judge is not a rare event at a high level meet. What's rare is straight 10s, where every judge on the panel scores the same dive a 10.

A 10 doesn't mean perfect

This trips people up, because a 10 in diving doesn't mean flawless in some absolute sense.

Judges score on a 0 to 10 scale, and 10 is labeled excellent.

A judge giving a 10 is saying the dive met the standard for that top category: strong takeoff, clean position, vertical entry, minimal or no splash.

Two judges watching the same dive can land on 9.5 and 10, because they weighted one small part differently.

The mechanics of how those scores turn into a final number are in how diving scoring works, and the short version is that the high and low get dropped before the rest are multiplied by degree of difficulty.

Why straight 10s are the real benchmark

Getting one judge to give you a 10 means one person saw the dive as excellent.

Getting seven judges to independently agree means there was nothing for anyone to catch. No slight over-rotation that one judge sitting at a different angle noticed, no small splash, no hidden knee bend at any point, no lean off the board.

What earns one

Whether you like it or not, straight 10s are almost always decided by the entry.

A dive can have a beautiful takeoff and a clean position and still get 9s if the entry has any splash. Conversely, a genuinely spectacular rip entry pulls scores up, because it's the last thing every judge sees and it's overweighted in diving.

At normal meets

If you're a diver or a diving parent, 10s at a high school meet are a different animal. Scoring runs looser, judging is more variable, and a 10 there doesn't mean what a 10 at a national or world event means.

That's not a knock on anyone. It's just that the general level of diving is lower, and in order for the competition to not be boring the range of scores has to scale accordingly.

Go for it and strive for that 10 anyway. They're worth celebrating, and every diver that gets one feels a great sense of accomplishment.
