How Much Does Diving Coaching Cost?
Share
The answer can vary a lot by location and facility size, but here are some rough ranges, and then we will get into the details of how you can get diving coaching in your area.
Rough US ranges:
- Club team dues: $150 to $400 a month, depending on how many sessions per week
- Learn-to-dive classes: $10 to $50 per session
- Private lessons: commonly $50 to $100 an hour
- Summer camps: $400 to $1,200 for a residential week
What actually drives the number
Three things, mostly.
Pool time is expensive and scarce. Diving wells are costly to build and maintain, and there aren't many coaches in the sport either.
Coach-to-diver ratio. Diving can't be coached in large groups the way swimming can. Someone has to watch each dive and give feedback on it, so smaller groups have to cover a similar expense for renting pool space.
Travel. Another thing to think about is the travel commitment if you are joining a team.
If you're weighing whether to commit, ask the program directly how many away meets a season looks like at your child's level. I cover more of this and other things to think about as a parent in the guide for diving parents.
Are private lessons worth it?
Private lessons are most valuable when there's a specific problem to solve. A takeoff that isn't working, a new dive that needs building, a fear block on one particular skill. A coach with undivided attention can fix in a few sessions what group practice might take weeks to get to.
The best thing to do is max out your days per week before thinking about private lessons.
Consistency is the best thing for getting better, and if you want private lessons but only dive two times per week, then you'd be better off putting that money toward going to practice more.
Finding clubs near you
I have a full article on this, and I am working on my own page where you can locate the best clubs in your area, but for now consider looking at the USA Diving club map or the AAU diving associated clubs.
They're your best bet at insured and (hopefully) qualified coaching.
