How Do Divers Not Get Dizzy?

Usually it's because they're looking the whole time.

The assumption is that a diver tucks up, closes their eyes, and hopes. And if they are doing it right (which not all divers do) then that's not what's happening.

Divers are watching specific things go past and using them to know exactly where they are.

It's called spotting, and it's partially why divers don't get dizzy.

What spotting actually looks like

Mid-flip, a diver is picking up reference points as they rotates past them. Usually the water, the board/platform or another pre-decided item at the pool somewhere. 

That could be the backstroke flags or a mark on the far wall.

Each time one of those goes by, that's a data point. See the water once, you're halfway around. See it twice, you know how fast you're going and how much room is left.

On a back two and a half, a diver is looking for the board on the way around and literally kicking their legs toward it. On a forward double, they're spotting the water at one and a half and then looking across the pool to stand the dive up.

It also explains something you've probably wondered about while watching.

Still water reflects the ceiling and shows you the bottom tiles, and from up high it gives you nothing to gauge where the surface is.

That's why competition pools run sprinklers across the surface. The "disturbed" water makes it visible to the diver before and during the dive.

Take that away and you'd see a lot more bad dives.

The part that isn't visual

The other half is that your inner ear adapts.

Your vestibular system is what makes people dizzy after spinning, and it recalibrates with exposure.

Divers, gymnasts, figure skaters, and pilots all end up with a m

uch higher tolerance for rotation than someone who never does it.

Basically, if you spin a lot for many years; your brain stops treating it as an emergency.

You also build a sense of where your body is in space without needing to look, which is the thing that lets a diver feel that a takeoff was fast or slow and adjust in the air.

Do divers ever get disoriented?

Definitely.

The first few attempts at a new dive are genuinely disorienting, because you don't yet know what you're supposed to see or when. You come out somewhere unexpected and you're guessing. That's exactly when people smack.

There's also a phenomenon called lost move syndrome, where a diver who has done a dive a thousand times suddenly can't find their spots on it anymore.

It's not a physical problem and it isn't fear exactly. It's more like the automatic version of the skill stops working. Gymnasts get it too, and it can take some time to work through.

So the honest answer isn't that divers never get dizzy. It's that they've built a system for knowing where they are.
